How big is that in comparison to the SEGA Nomad? Because I have one of those, and it's pretty ridiculously large for a portable system.
IIRC the Nomad was a touch larger than the black plastic boxes they packaged Genesis games in, so I'd assume it's bigger than the Game Gear.
I mean, it was basically half a Genesis.
The Lynx's pretty good in the size department too. Note that that's the smaller model:

So I just bought Shinobi for the Game Gear on the 3DS VC. After doing some research, I concluded it to be probably one of the few worth playing. It's hard as hell, though.

The size doesn't bother me so much as the battery consumption. Fortunately, having owned a Genesis as well, I can just use the Genesis's power adapter for the Game Gear when I'm at home.
