The home secretary, Theresa May, who has imposed a 20% cut in Whitehall grants on forces, has said frontline policing can be protected by using the private sector to transform services provided to the public, but this is the first clear indication of what that will mean in practice. May said on Thursday that she hoped the "business partnership" programme would be in place next spring.
The breathtaking list of policing activities up for grabs includes investigating crimes, detaining suspects, developing cases, responding to and investigating incidents, supporting victims and witnesses, managing high-risk individuals, patrolling neighbourhoods, managing intelligence, managing engagement with the public, as well as more traditional back-office functions, such as managing forensics, providing legal services, managing the vehicle fleet, finance and human resources

It is a very bad idea, hence the massive 'ARGH' that it is being planned.
Remember, kids, just because the free market is simple and easy to use, like a pregen fighter with feats picked out for newbies in 3.5e, doesn't mean it's always effective.
So, what's the rationale behind these increasingly audacious privatizations?
Edit:
Mainly ideology driven, also lobbying.
Next we must privatise breathing. And seeing.
^Er...those are privatised. And I'd really like to keep it that way; I can breathe just fine without the government authorizing it ;P
Also commercialised.
CONSERVE AIR BREATHE LESS
Yay, plutocracy This helps facilitate my badass-self-in-a-dystopian-future pipedreams.
The next step would be to privatise the parliament, however we've already got that covered with the lobbying.
Oh God.
No, I don't advise making GodCorp. That might annoy somebody.
But Ian, don't you understand? The private sector will make a much better police forece because they'll do things more efficiently and certainly won't be beholden to a profit marghahahahahahaha
Tell me, how long until Cameron's term is up?
^^ Not "God", though.
Locke is turning in his grave.
Literally every good person: The police force should not become privatized because then companies would put profit over reliability and service.
Private industry: ~faaaaaaaaaaart~
2015.
However, he may still get re-elected as Labour (main opposition) aren't really appearing to do much at all it seems currently.
Hey, you know what this kinda reminds me of?
Feudalism.
Except that had the advantage of being honest.
Hmmm...how is pay going to be determined? Because the way of making this suck the least would involve paying them less if more crime is happening.
Well they'll probably pay them less to make more profits.
You misunderstand. How is pay to the organizations hiring them going to be determined?
Probably by giving them a juicy contract that at first looks to save public money but like every PFI scheme actually ends up costing the taxpayer a huge amount.
Yeah. My point is that if done reasonably, it could make this...not a disaster. But then, if reasonable people were behind this, it wouldn't be happening.
Exactly.
I mean recently (last few days) we just had a welfare reform bill go through which basically will cut a lot of welfare and screw a lot of people who disabled. See this post regarding it.
Also the government despite the huge opposition of so many healthcare professionals and royal colleges and other people are still determined to try and push through the healthcare bill which surprise surprise will be a further step forwards to dismantling the welfare state and enabling privatisation.
Don't forget the tuition fee increase for universities.
The Tories are really dedicated to private industry and dismantling the welfare system.
> The Tories are really dedicated to private industry and dismantling the welfare system.
This is what happens when people take life being good for granted and forget what made it so good in the first place.
Also the being taken out to lunch and sitting on boards of corporations that stand to benefit from privatisation don't help.
