    you missed one fuckton of a memo But seriously, Seven Samurai is one of my favourite films. I think it hits that perfect place in terms of its depiction of a warrior class like the samurai, where it smiles upon them for what they could be at their best, but also notes their failings and complicity in the conditions of those less fortunate than themselves.

    I remember Ebert commenting on 7 Samurai being a cultural shift for Japan since class distinctions still played a huge role and Kurosawa took the conceptions of class vs. individual morality to task.

    I also recall that Kurosawa comes from a samurai family, and that Seven Samurai was something of an apology towards the lower classes of historical and present Japanese society. That angle comes out very clearly with that knowledge in mind, I think.

    There really isn't one, between all the different Orders, factions and nationalities of knights. Any particular Crusading Order? The Templars, for instance, had a lot of French knights. The Teutonic Order was made entirely of Germans, and the Hospitallers had a decent spread but erred towards Italian.

    Also, keep in mind that the medieval period never "died" as such; the Western cultural sphere is a continuation and progression of that time period. With that in mind, I lot of common names today would be used by knights back in the day. Names associated with the Christian Gospel would be common (John, Paul, Mark, Luke, ect.), so you might want to think about where your knight comes from and try to find a regional variant, or even just use the name in its vanilla state. Apart from that, there's the names that belong to particular regions. "Siegfried" is a pretty awesome German name, and I expect a few historical knights would've worn that one proudly. Then you've got Sigmund, Heinrich, Otto, Hans, Johannes and so on and so forth from the same culture. If you can find translations of some medieval combat manuals (try www.wiktenauer.com), then you could use elements of the names of the historical authors. "Paulus" is a Roman variation on Paul used by a German fightmaster, for instance. One popular fightmaster for modern study is Peter von Danzig. My knowledge is thinner outside of the Germanic sphere of culture, though. You'd have to do more of your own research on those grounds.

    I was looking for something that would be associated with the Templars, but also something very Germanic sounding. I suppose that would be rather difficult based on what you've put forth. Siegfried and Sigmund are pretty good, but they're too close to Sigismund. Can you think of anything similar to that?

    No-one would fault you for Siegfried, since he's pretty much the consummate early medieval Germanic hero, be it under that name or the earlier Scandinavian "Sigurd". Here's a few others, though: - Gottfried (Germanic form for "Godfrey") - Ignatius (Roman names were not uncommon for Germanic knights) - Isidor - Dietrich - Wolfgang - Alaric (belonged to a king of the Visigoth tribe; pretty badass)
