Homeopathy

I would probably never have known what it was if some people didn't spend so much time complaining about what an obvious fake it apparently is.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Well it is kind of an obvious fake.

/hasn't seen a lot of complaining about it here
  • People wouldn't be pissed off it wasn't somewhat mainstream amongst people who aren't actual doctors.
  • "I would probably never have known what it was if some people didn't spend so much time complaining about what an obvious fake it apparently is."

Isn't that why they spend so much time complaining about it?

  • But I've never heard anyone in real life mention it, ever.

    Cue-bey
And yet the products are still on the shelves...some people, somewhere, are making this a worthwhile business strategy.

This is what homeopaths actually believe.

The homeopathy test is wonderful: basically, if a site promotes homeopathy, you can safely ignore anything they say about medicine, because their knowledge of physics and chemistry is clearly zero.

I remember how, for a while, my father was following this guy named Dr. Sebi, who claimed that the germ theory of disease was ineffective for curing them, and his theory that diseases were caused when mucous membranes in the body were compromised, along with some other stuff about electrical resonance in black people.

  • Well, now you know about it, and how fake it is.

    So what?

  • Well, yes, I know not to buy it next time I have the flu, but it still bugs me that I've never heard of it in real life but people talk about it as if it was a more influential hoax than Scientology, Objectivism, and Meme theory combined.

To be fair, it's a millions-of-dollars-a-year industry. No chump change.

    I do, constantly.
  • My mom sometimes tries homeopathetic products, but goes all mopey when I point out it's hogwash. Meh, stubborn parents.
  • So...what is homeopathy? Is it just psychological medicine? Placebo-y? That doesn't sound too bad.
  • a little muffled
The basic idea of homeopathy is that you can cure diseases by taking things which would cause similar symptoms in healthy people. Except, to hide the fact that that makes no fucking sense, they dilute the ingredients to the point at which there is more than likely none of it left, so you're essentially taking water. Oh, and they believe that the more diluted it is, the more effective it is. Somehow.

So, yeah, it's just a placebo, but it's one of those "the medical establishment is keeping us down" conspiracy theory deals.

    ...oh. OK then. Hrm.

That still doesn't explain the SMBC homeopathy joke.

    Link?
  • Here is a sketch about it.

It's about how, if there are less homeopaths, then the effect will be stronger on those remaining since it's spread out less thinly.
