"Sweden is the best country in the world for women."

edited 2011-06-10 13:20:44 in General
Which women? The women who toe the PC line. The women who put themselves first, and the people they love last. But that's not all women. There are women who value independent thought. There are women who want a strong man to challenge them. There are women who smile when they see the men they love happy. There are women who just like smiling, period.

Sweden is not the best country for those women.

I can't really comment on this, as I'm not especially in the loop about Sweden.

  • Glaives are better.

Yeah, Christianity and the modern era hit Scandinavia like a goddamn train. I feel bad for all the Swedes, once famed warriors and adventurers, who are now best known for IKEA and meatballs.

  • MSN pronounced Sweden "the world's most advanced country for women." From the article:

"The goal of equality starts young: "Anti-Sexism Awareness
Training" begins in kindergarten, where male toddlers are encouraged to
play with dolls, and females with toy tractors. In school, classes in
cooking, sewing, metalworking, and woodworking are compulsory for both
sexes. All education, including college, is free, and girls routinely
outperform boys; in 2005, women made up more than 60 percent of all
Swedish college students. All this adds up to more flexible gender
roles later: As one Swedish website puts it, "In our country, women
drive the buses and men push the baby buggies.""
  • Okay, so this is the crypto-sexist, thread, then?
  • Flexible gender roles are good.

    @ Myrmidon: Please elaborate.
  • and the people they love last.

...do people like this really exist? (this doesn't count anyone who doesn't have anyone they love to begin with)

    nvm

Ed: I'd say sociopaths, but then I realized they don't love people to begin with.

If it means anything, this is the same country that produced The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, known in it's native country as Men Who Hate Women. Stieg Larsson had his own issues, though.
  • «I feel bad for all the Swedes, once famed warriors and adventurers, who are now best known for IKEA and meatballs.»
If being known for IKEA and meatballs is the price to pay for not dying at sea of scurvy or at war, I'd take it.
  • This one does not understand just how would these women be disadvantaged in Sweden. It's not like they can't be like that if that is what they want
  • I was talking to myrimdon, not you. I agree with you AHR, all the way. I just don't agree with the methods. The Swedish are using pressure and compulsion to get men and women to act the same way, rather than giving each equal choice.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, I'm not seeing what the problem with this is.

EDIT:^Hm, that's an interesting point, although I think the point is just to get them to try new things.

    > who are now best known for IKEA and meatballs.

I like IKEA and Swedish meatballs.
  • It does not seem to have any more of a pressure than what are males and females in other countries are currently in. In most countries, girls are "encouraged" to play with dolls, and up to certain age, they don't have much choice - just how many other toys are offered for girls? The same goes for boys. So this one honestly does not see much trouble.

Now, if girls were forbidden to play with dolls and boys - with cars, then there would be a trouble indeed

although I think the point is just to get them to try new things.

    I suppose that's nice oftentimes.

Then there's the part where they actually kick your status down for not doing them after you find out from experience you don't like it, even though you may never actually have to use it later on in life.

^ I almost forgot to read the "- with cars," part there...
  • Also, don't forget the increasing proliferation of Swedish indie games.
  • I think the wording is bad, but other than that, I think classes compulsory for both genders is a fine idea. Now, men tend to be rather defaultish in today's society, so that's probably why they were encouraged to play with female toys, but so long as girls are also encouraged to play with male toys, and are allowed to play with any type of toy they please, there should be no problem.

I do think they should keep encouraging it though, because at the moment society is very gender based, and a kid is less likely try something that isn't marketed to them.
  • Glaives are better.

Ponicalica, I'd rather die of scurvy (which can be cured by a nice glass of lemonade or two) than be a goddamn sissy boy.

Brad, I know what you mean. Traditional gender roles came about because of biological instincts. While we shouldn't discourage people from pursuing careers and roles outside of traditional gender roles, we should not indoctrinate children into believing that they're not supposed to feel the way they do.

Seriously, if it's wrong to force a gay person to act straight, then it's equally wrong to force straight, regular people to act in non-traditional manners.

@Myrmidon: What is that picture even supposed to mean?  It's in this thread as well as the videogame publishers thread.

«Traditional gender roles came about because of biological instincts.»
[citation needed](especially since «traditional» gender roles tend to be different among different cultures, etc.)

It's fine if you're a sissy boy, Ed, but I'd rather be a MAN. A MAN who shits thunder and pisses lightning. A MAN who sharpens his axe with his teeth. A MAN who knows that adversity is God being afraid of his progress.

EDIT: I'm not talking about men wearing pants versus dresses, or women being supposed to stay in the kitchen or forage for food. There are certain biological predispositions based upon the chemical balance in each person's brain that shape their personality, meaning that men are more likely to be assertive, women are more likely to be socially perceptive, men are more likely to have abstract problem-solving skills, etc.

If traditional gender roles are purely arbitrary, then they never would have caught on. People LIKE acting the way they do, because that's what they're designed for.

  • Except you're not, you're a kid posting on the Internet.
  • ...I'd post "who can't even get a girl to look at him twice" to compound with Poni's post, but I think that would cross the line.

Wouldn't it make more sense to fart thunder than shit it?

Also, something extremely hot that goes at the speed of light going through your urethra. Uhh. You sure you want that? I'm pretty sure even a MAN™ fears for significant damage to his penis.
  • Glaives are better.

A real MAN's urethra is made of asbestos.
