I agree with Vorpy. So much.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I will admit that I do this, mostly when it comes to music, since I listen to hipster music.
  • Vorpy... most people are socially dependent enough to care what other people think. It helps them function with something vaguely proxying unity. Most importantly... they need to know who is like them (therefore probably shares genes / memes with them and will help propagate them)... and who isn't (and won't).

The human population is currently around 6 billion. It is somewhat contiguous in its contact across the entire face of the planet. The conditions for knowing who is "us" and who is "them" have started deviating from the genetic to the memetic. And obviously we can't let other memes gain precedence at the potential expense of our own, resources being limited and all that. NATURE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT SONNY JIM!

    Ok, ACTUALLY...

What I'm getting at is that you're thinking upper-mind here.
You know what you're saying is right, but I doubt you feel it. It is cool to you on a conscious, mental level to like what you like and let others do the same...  but on a subconscious level your ideas want to kill all the other mutually exclusive ideas, copulate with the ones that aren't mutually exclusive... and generally spread like wildfire... AND you're probably at least partially willing to help them do that because you already know how to do that stuff with genes. It works the same way. HOW EFFICIENT!

But what I'm really getting at is....
.... Give it up. People are hardwired to be douchebags. It isn't especially conscious, and they couldn't logically justify it if they tried. Remember Hanlon's Razor.

  • So anyway, how does this apply to non-works? Like religion, war, drugs...

Also the first time I saw this title I thought it said "a mod" rather than "mad"
  • If these examples are taking place on a "neutral ground," then I disagree. I don't go to Naruto forums. But if we're on a Bleach forum & you start going on a tangent about Naruto, expect to be informed of its shittiness.

One thing I absolutely cannot stand is this idea that an opinion is a precious snowflake to be protected from all harsh criticisms, unless it's negative, in which case you're just an argumentative asshole.

I'd really much rather have to deal with fair objections against something I like than a bunch of positive stuff that's...less than thought-out. It's just more interesting that way.

  • I thought we were at 7 Billion and heading for 8 now?
  • You can change. You can.
My problem with the OP reasoning is that it's the same kind of bullshit that discourages discussion and instead makes people do the usual "LOL, LET'S JUST AGREE TO DISAGREE" stuff that makes media discussion so boring at times.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people's tastes, but I like discussing them, that's all.
  • I tend to grade people by their memetic similarity to myself... but that is only a big deal if you actually give a fuck about my gradings in the first place. Conveniently enough, how much people give a fuck about my gradings is generally correlated closely to how they equivalently grade me based on my memetic similarity to them.

So... simply put.... if we like the same stuff, we think it is cool that we like the same stuff. If we don't like the same stuff then.... well... who gives a fuck what you think anyway?

Thread is made in March 14th. I bumped it because the MLP vs. Lolis thing was getting out of hand and a few people's arguments reeked of this.
  • I like discussing with people who dislike things that I like, as long as they're civil about it. It makes for enjoyable conversation. And I just thread hopped, so I'm sure this has already been said anyways.

That said, the people that complain about Twilight/Eragon/the Star Wars prequels/whatever all the time are pretty irritating.
  • Good job Vorpy

Huh, didn't even notice this until now. But I still agree.

That may be the silliest nerd fight ever. Granted, nerd fights are silly be design...

However, I like lolis and MLP (well, the three episodes I saw, but I'm sure that I'll like the other too). What does that say about me?

It means you represent most MLP fans anyway, the sick freaks.

  • You can change. You can.
You like mass effect too, Bob?

    ...

    Marry me?
  • I wish they kept ME1's ammo system. Namely, the part where it was unlimited.
  • You can change. You can.
    Me too...

I mean, really? Cartridges? Fuck that shit.
  • Sorry, Juan. I'm married to the lord.

Still, he might be up for a threeway. :D
  • You can change. You can.
    ...but I'm Satan....

Don't you know my name? Or is it just the nature of my game?

  • Which Satan are you, cool, "fuck shit up" Satan, or lame, "go up to heaven and have a cordial conversation with god occasionally" Satan?
  • You can change. You can.
@Bob: I'm more like, "I pleasure myself and the people who want me to pleasure them" Satan. Sometimes I fuck shit u for the lulz, though.
  • @Juan: Worse than that, the types who want to assert their opinion, but then when their reasoning doesn't quite stand up, they get all mad about it & go, "Well, it's my opinion, don't judge it!"

It's like, "Just pick a stance & stick with it. Don't start arguing an opinion if you're just going to get mad about it later."
