I don't feel anything more when fiction tries to create characters that relate to you more.
This makes it difficult for me to understand why certain flaws should be placed, why the characters must be closer to the mundane for enjoyment, etc.
Some guy in college all the sudden teleports into a fantasy world where he gets a harem within the first few episodes?
Some guy who was already in the fantasy world in the first place and has a personality and appearance that is attractive enough for the harem to make sense?
I prefer the latter, even though I can't relate to it as well.

A universal character only works in abstract. Characters like Sam Witwicky from the Bayformers movies are based on a preconceived stereotype of the target audience, which is why they don't work. I find that I can more relate to a character that has an independent personality that just happens to click with mine, often a relatively minor character.
