I don't think that that's what that picture is saying. At all.

It looked more like it was saying Nintendo was most popular during the NES, and their popularity fell with every generation after that. Then they shot back up to the top with the Wii.

However, the wii controller is so tall that it reaches the same height than the NES one. This is obviously an intentional effect, since the scales for the sizes are all screwed up.

Well he could have rotated the Wii's controller to avert that too, but I think making them lower and lower fits "descent" more.

Descent can also mean being descended from something, i.e. the "evolution" of these controllers, and what I maintain is a The Descent of Man reference.
