Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But it doesn't come without its share of problems. I liked how Melee handled in terms of physics a lot more and I thought it was a little more balanced, so Brawl seems like a downgrade in that regard.

Now I could just stick to playing Melee, but that means getting used to the different timing and controls, and becoming worse in Brawl, and vise versa. Also, that's not a very good option since Brawl is much more of a crowd pleaser, the selection of characters is a lot better, and it's easier for beginners.

Of course this is all a moot point since I don't have anyone to play with right now. (So ronery, etc., etc.)

Maybe they'll fix this crap for the sequel?

Comments

  • I like turtles.
The number one thing they need to do for the sequel is have good online.
  • Oh god, the online play was so disappointing.
  • You could get a mod for the game, like Brawl +, Balanced Brawl and Brawl -.
  • They're somethin' else.
The one thing the Smash Bros series has taught me is never to play that game to win. And also, if you're going to remove the one thing that makes the game remotely fun (that being the chaotic mess it is), you might as well play King of Fighters anyway.
  • I've heard of mods, but that sounds like more trouble than its worth. I might consider it if I ever get the chance to play the game for an extended period (as in, several months) with someone else.
  • Is Brawl more of a crowd-pleaser? My friends mostly like Melee better. I haven't gotten the opportunity to play much Brawl, actually...
  • The n64 bros was the best...

Depends on how much your friends are noobs, I guess. The only people who prefer Melee that I've seen are pretty serious gamers.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^ This.

For just shitting around with friends Brawl works well, until you keep getting fox's final smash and landing tabks on them.

Then they never play you again :(
  • Solid Snake is probably my favorite character, and I think his final smash is one of the best and holy crap my avatar looks like pony Solid Snake.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
^ Unrelated but I like your title now!

My favourite smash is either Sonic's or Captain Falcon. Purely for the showyness of them.

    Gelzo,

Sorry, this probably is a cop-out answer, but I think you should just play whatever game you like the best. I do not believe that the crowd pleasing aspect should really play into your decision here much.

I have heard many times online that Melee is better than Brawl (especially in the IGN Smash Bros. Forum), but Brawl does have a good number of new characters (like Olimar), which I think complicate that discussion a bit. For example, one might really like one of the new characters, but dislike tripping, the floaty physics, or whatever else.

I would be pretty surprised if online play was not improved in the next edition of Smash Bros. given the complaints about it. I also think that fixing online play is probably more likely than changing the gameplay of Smash Bros. to make it less for "casual" players.

I agree with Schitzo though. I cannot say I like playing Smash Bros. "super seriously" and I think that being too competitive in such games can suck the fun of them sometimes. Then again, you should probably take what I say here with a heaping helping of salt, since I am "casual" rather than "hardcore" when it comes to games.
  • The main things I didn't like about Brawl were Zero Suit Samus and the fanfic-quality story mode. Which was also really hard to play if you weren't on widescreen, cause enemies would just fly at you from offscreen. Or pits. And the plot still makes no sense even after reading it online, the fact it seems to have made some tropers have Tear Jerker moments is as hilarious as it is sad.

Don't care about the balance when playing with friends, as we play to make hilarious things happen instead of winning. When we did try to win, the glaring problems with balance started to show.
  • My friends who prefer Melee are not at all serious. Neither are the ones who prefer Brawl, for that matter. I'm the serious one :p
