Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But it doesn't come without its share of problems. I liked how Melee handled in terms of physics a lot more and I thought it was a little more balanced, so Brawl seems like a downgrade in that regard.
Now I could just stick to playing Melee, but that means getting used to the different timing and controls, and becoming worse in Brawl, and vise versa. Also, that's not a very good option since Brawl is much more of a crowd pleaser, the selection of characters is a lot better, and it's easier for beginners.
Of course this is all a moot point since I don't have anyone to play with right now. (So ronery, etc., etc.)
Maybe they'll fix this crap for the sequel?

Sorry, this probably is a cop-out answer, but I think you should just play whatever game you like the best. I do not believe that the crowd pleasing aspect should really play into your decision here much.
I have heard many times online that Melee is better than Brawl (especially in the IGN Smash Bros. Forum), but Brawl does have a good number of new characters (like Olimar), which I think complicate that discussion a bit. For example, one might really like one of the new characters, but dislike tripping, the floaty physics, or whatever else.
I would be pretty surprised if online play was not improved in the next edition of Smash Bros. given the complaints about it. I also think that fixing online play is probably more likely than changing the gameplay of Smash Bros. to make it less for "casual" players.
I agree with Schitzo though. I cannot say I like playing Smash Bros. "super seriously" and I think that being too competitive in such games can suck the fun of them sometimes. Then again, you should probably take what I say here with a heaping helping of salt, since I am "casual" rather than "hardcore" when it comes to games.
Don't care about the balance when playing with friends, as we play to make hilarious things happen instead of winning. When we did try to win, the glaring problems with balance started to show.
