Teenage boys in fiction.

(This'll be my last thread for a while today) In most Young Adult fiction I've read, teenage boys seem to be portrayed more or less as idiots. Yes, there are exceptions, but the a male protagonist and the males of his close group of friends are mostly horny idiots. They continously do completely dangerous and flat-out irrational things, they quite often are not that good in school, and all they tend to think about is girls. This is annoying to read, since these guys often do things so dumb I wonder why I'm supposed to care about them. Yes, Testosterone makes people aggressive. Yes, teenage boys are not reknowned for their common sense. And puberty does make you horribly horny. But still, a little deviantion from the norm is appreciated, guys. I wouldn't mind this so much if the entire male side of casts are like this. Except for the token nerd, most male teenagers in fiction are like this, though they do deviate a little, such as the "whiny bitch who still tags along anyway". But that's like saying that crappy cars deviate on which parts break down first. We're reading A Seperate Peace by John Knowles in my English class right now, and it's really hard to care about the main characters, Phineas and Gene. This is because Gene seems to be a whiny bitch who none-the-less does stupid things with the other boys anyway, is petty as hell, holds non-sensical grudges, and then commits a really dickish act in the first few chapters for no other reason than being a petty dick. Phineas, on the other hand, is a irrational idiot who does really dangerous and completely non-sensical things, and can somehow get away with breaking school policy, and feels the need to marginalize Gene's work. I'm supposed to care about these guys, why?

In most Young Adult fiction I've read,

What kind of Young Adult fiction? Fantasy? Drama? True-Story? Horror?
  • You stopped blocking me?

Any kind really. YA fiction seems to think that boys are dumb horndogs who love nothing but girls and being stupid, and girls are mysterious creatures who love nothing but boys ans shopping
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
"In most Young Adult fiction I've read, teenage boys seem to be portrayed

Sounds like a rather realistic portrayal.

Yes, I don't have a high opinion of teenagers.
  • But they are portrayed as complete idiots.

Teen boys aren't known for their common sense, but most people have a modicum of intelligence.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
^ Tell that to my old secondary school. And that was a selective school...
  • a little muffled
I can't say any of the "young adult" (hate that term) fiction I've read is like this, but I suppose I haven't really read that much.
  • Well, I'm getting sick of books implying I'm a horny idiot who sucks at school.

I'd rather have intelligent main characters. This Loser Is You is a fucking awful trope.

    :/
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    "Young Adult fiction"

    Well there's your problem.
  • Face it Xavier, teenagers suck.

Teenage boys in general annoy me.

No offense guys, love all y'all.
  • Shut up, you don't count.

    -hugs-

  • Can I help you?

...But, Pedo Bear only likes girls.

Besides, wouldn't "teenage" be too old for him?

Not to mention, how the hell would he even get a job at the FBI? I mean, dood, like, what. Man.

...Why am I arguing the specifics of a pedophilic bear working for the FBI? I hate this site.
  • While it is true that Pedobear only likes girls, he likes girls from ages 5-16.
  • ^^ Ever seen the movie "Catch Me If You Can?"
  • Well, I'm getting sick of books implying I'm a horny idiot who sucks at school.
You don't know how much I'm resisting urge to say something mean...
  • You can change. You can.
    ...-sigh-

Everybody is an idiot as a teenager. Fuck, I'm one for crying out loud and I can tell you I'm fucking right. Because it's me.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
"Teenage boys in general annoy me."

    "in general"

  • ^^Thank you.

    Writer, Artist, Obscure.
Okay, take one Traces series by Malcolm Rose and one Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer and call me in the morn. Oh, and a Myth-Adventures series by Robert Asprin for good measure. That outta tide ye over with not-stupid teenage dudes.

oh  and uh Juan Carlos speaks the truth.

  • Yeah, teenage boys are stupid. Cute. But stupid.

Sure, cute. If you like dirt and greasy skin. Teenage boys are gross.

But seriously, I mean it. Then why did I strike it out? I don't know.
  • Heh well...The teenage boys that I like are very clean...
  • I just don't like the pervasive idea that all teenagers are awful people. Everywhere I go (online, at least) the attitude toward any teenager is passive-aggressive and snarky at best.

It's not like you just automatically become a good person the minute you reach adulthood.
  • You can change. You can.
Teenage people are going through a process. They are prototypes, trying out what works, deleting the flaws and keeping what works. Of course, they are going to be faulty.

But guess what? The final product won't be perfect either, it just won't be as bad as the prototype, that's all.
  • Exactly. The only thing you have to keep in mind while drealing with anyone of any age is that no one is perfect. Sure, teenagers can be stupid, petty, annoying and everything else, but they're growing a lot and learning how to best communicate with people, and as such, run into a lot of times where...

No, I am not getting back into wannabe psychologist mode again. But, again, no one is perfect, so, seconding Juan and Xavier.
