  I live in Toronto and I've heard "leftenant" at least as often as "lootenant", though I don't talk about military ranks often enough for it to be a representative sample.

  That would explain it. Leftenant is used by the UK and commonwealth nations, while Lieutenant is used by the US.

  Cygan: ....That's how I pronounce it too. But I'm American, not Australian...strange, though my accent has always been an unholy combination of accents anyway.

  Uh....I know that. My dad had told me. And technically me and DYRE are British as well, given that we're American.

  We also still self-identify as under the British Empire (sorta, some of us). And we're not as far-back as America is.
