Okay, this is a racial stereotype I don't get. A lot of people like those things. It's like ice cream and bacon, they're popular foods.

People used to think that all black people were from the South. They also thought that everyone in the South liked fried chicken and watermelon. Therefore...

This probably had a grain of truth to it at one point, but now it's a bit ridiculous.

I have no understanding of why the love of delicious fried chicken is stereotypical. Why the hell anyone likes watermelon is beyond me and is likely caused by some sort o pact with the devil.

Myr: Fried chicken and watermelon are working class food (this was a essential summer meal growing up - white, in Oregon).

So the stereotype was "hur hur, blacks are poor."

Some racism only makes sense if conceived in economic terms, like the anti-Chinese nursery rhyme that suggests they deserve to be killed by trains for frugality.
