What the fuck is a Rothe?

edited 2011-01-16 12:42:45 in General
No, seriously. I finally get down to the fifth layer on umpteenth attempt at this stupid game, and I get killed by some weird abomination that I don't even recognize? Fuck this.

  • But you never had any to begin with.
They're a bit like musk oxen. Appear in the Forgotten Realms setting.
  • Saigyouji is turning into my fantasy encyclopedia troper. I bet when he dreams, he sees what lies beyond the gates of Oblivion.
  • "I've only made it to the second level of Nethack, due to a UI worse than Dwarf Fortress'. How that works I'm not sure."

I thought so too, but I think I'm getting better at it.

    Are you playing Nethack?

I hate rothes.  They either give me too much food or too much beatdown.

I hear they're like underground cows.  Whatever.

I think mumaks and baluchitheriums and titanotheres are far more dangerous though.

Fun fact: I once had a tame mumak.  I named it Hello when it was still a kitten, for obvious reference.  I now have a screenshot of Hello Mumak.
  • WHat game is this?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Nethack lets you look monsters up, you know.

And I really can't see how its UI is complex at all. Certainly better than that of DF.
  • The UI of Nethack is actually pretty straightforward.

There's only a handful of menus, and pretty much everything is done with a single keypress (plus an extra one or two to specify and item and/or direction).

Some of the stuff is kind of unintuitive, like the skills system and pretty much every command that starts with #, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward as roguelikes go, at least.

And compared to Dwarf Fortress, it's ridiculously simple.
  • I heard that the only point of the game is to find a Cockatrice and kill everything with it.

Might wanna wear gloves if you're doing that, though.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I've never even used a cockatrice that way.

Really, for the game that coined the phrase "The devteam thinks of everything," I'd avoid describing anything as "the only point."

I heard that the only point of the game is that there are many ways to win the game and none of them are easy.
  • Well, you use the cockatrice to kill every NPC, boss and demon lord in existence by touching them with anything that the cockatrice is.

Except some of them are resistant to stonining.

    Including other cockatrices.

    Also, stone golems are nasty.
  • I should probably try to play NetHack again.

It was hard as fuck, though.

Heh, I never got past like dungeon level 19 anyway.  I usually screw up somewhere long before that though.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, I've never gotten that far. I've had some pretty fun runs though.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
    "UI worse than Dwarf Fortress'"
