So . . . many . . . Magic cards.

This is a two-part complaint:

I've been going through the Gatherer and looking at some of the older cards. In particular, the really good black cards. Suddenly my vampire deck is starting to feel boring in comparison. But two things about this bug me.

1. I told myself I wouldn't get lost in the amazingness of the older Magic cards, but here I am, looking at the cheapest stuff possible and hoping I can get some of it at a card shop today (stuff like Dark Ritual, Mind Twist, Demonic Tutor, Necropotence, Entomb, etc.). Eventually I might want to start looking at other colors too. D:

Basically, the huge catalogue might soon become yet another timesink.

2. I don't know how many people I'll ever even get to play such decks against. I know one--a friend of mine who has no compunctions against playing cards from the Unhinged/Unglued sets and has run decks with probably over 200 cards before (to surprising effect, I might add)--but I'm afraid that anyone else would be like "aww hell naw" upon seeing some of the cards, and then I'd have to make at least one completely different deck.

I wish I had started sooner, as well. Then I might not be so bewildered at the comments sections on each card, where all sorts of combos with cards that I've never heard of are listed.

As a side note, I found the card that is Nyktos's avatar, Toshiro Umezawa: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Toshiro%20Umezawa

Mephidross (sp?) Vampire is an awesome one to use. I first got into it back when I was stealing shit from people at a card store when I ran out of money and couldn't buy cards anymore. Because people brought both YGO and MTG decks, I found a nice Black and White one that was based on a set I found called Shadowmoor, which had the cutest selkies I've ever seen.

Divinity of Pride was my favorite, as was Twilight Shephard and Umbra Stalker. And Baneslayer Angel.

^^ I wish I had found this card so much sooner. Thanks for showing it to me. But at the same time, that illustrates my problem with being so new to the game.

Your story about stealing cards from people reminds me of when I used to go to the Boys and Girls Club during summers, before realizing it was full of brats and hoodrats. People, myself included, mostly played Yugioh and Naruto cards, though. I don't recall seeing Magic cards often. But stealing was also a frequent thing there. I can't remember if I ever had anything stolen.

^ I also love Divinity of Pride. And after looking at Umbra Stalker, I now want to play a deck specifically built around a stupidly huge mana curve and playing creatures cheaply, a la cards such as Living Death.

I still don't know that some cards existed since I play with only a few MTG purists (they only play what sets are in and sell off everything that gets cycled out).

Oh yeah. I just remembered another one: Sadistic Sacrament. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=195632

Wait . . . shit, I think I have one of those lying around somewhere. And a Xathrid Demon (found him). And two Ajanis and a Liliana (in my current deck).

Sanguine Bond + Blood Tribute = Win.

I love that combo. That's actually one of the main combos I was going to focus on in the vampire deck. But I have one Sanguine Bond and no Blood Tributes. :(

    No rainbow star
This just reminded me of when I had a cursed dragon stolen from me

Ended up buying it back for $21. In pennies

I'm still not sure whether that was a stupid move, or a brilliant one

    EDIT: Yugioh card, not Magic

I got my Lightsworn deck (which was netting $900 at the time) for only 200 dollars, due to me trading Shapesnatches for the other cards.

I just got back from a card shop, having spent sixty dollars on twenty cards and some miniatures. Pretty good deal, considering that, for three dollars, I can get a pack of cards that might give me a useful card. Here's what I got, if anyone cares:

    1x Avatar of Woe
    2x Devouring Strossus, Mortivore
    3x Living Death
4x Dark Ritual, Diabolic Edict, Innocent Blood

I would have probably grabbed some Hypnotic Specters and Hymns to Tourach if they weren't seven or eight dollars apiece. And I'll be heading back there, and to another card shop, in search of others. As is, hopefully I can wreck my friends now.

Oooo, that's nice. Rather than building a deck nowadays I just purchase nice looking cards that I like. The most current one on my "next to be bindered" are:

    * Protean Hydra, Apocalypse Hydra, Godsire and Progenitus.
  • Why buy cards when I can look at pictures on the internet?

Because they are fucking shiny, and I love shiny things.

I think I'll post the deck to the Magic thread at TVT, and here. I'm a little worried about the mana curve at the moment.
