My my, the anti-German racism!

  • The statement "German sounds harsh" generally is not clarfied into a subjective statement with something like "I think". Therefore one can only take it as an objective statement.

I can imagine that German sounds pretty harsh to others. Dutch (which is kinda similar to German) sounds very soft to me in contrast. So do other languages and not just Germanic ones.

The Latin languages sort of have their own reputation for being flowing, flowery... so many words rhyme with each other. The German language has a reputation for being harsh, but so does Russian, yeah?

^^^ Subjective statements like that shouldn't need a disclaimer to let others know it's subjective.

And being a native speaker doesn't make their feelings toward it objective.
  • I'm kind of surprised Chagen's dad admires the French language. He sounds like the kind of person who'd still be calling the things you get with hamburgers "Freedom Fries".
  • My dad is more intellectual than that, Myr. He loves history and reading in general. He's actually smart and wise in some ways--he fostered my love of science, math, and reading.

^ Yet he somehow never made the jump from WWII to the Cold War (when Germany was considered to be half our allies, and half a set of poor souls who'd be our allies if they had a chance to). If he never even caught up to the Cold War, good luck finding modern day. :)
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
@Nyarly's response to my post that was too long ago to indicate with up arrows: I kinda figured; I only mentioned that because I like how silly "Fledermausmann" sounds.

I was confused about that too. I still am, actually.

And here. Well, people are weird like that.

Baron: He's too busy hating the Soviets to focus on Germany during the Cold War.

He is 52. He lived through the Cold War. And he also believes that Russia is still Communist.

^ All the more reason that he should consider modern Germany (a Germany reunified on the template of West Germany, not East) to be a good people and government. :)

    Why ain't I surprised?

I guess, he thinks that Italy is fascist too?
  • I think I need to clarify. My dad does not hate Germany. He isn't actually racist towards anybody, to be fair. He did say those things, but he doesn't actually view Germany as the root of all evil.

He does, however, harbor dissappointment for them because he wrongly believes that they try to hide all mention of WWII (He believes that stupid meme of "In germany, the timelines skip 1935-1945" and similar bullshit).

  • Master Guardian of the Passive Voice

Well, they do avoid mentioning it, but that's out of shame... not denial.

  • Nya: I don't know. I think he idealizes Italy like he does France.

Sounds like he confuses Germany with Japan.

In history class, they really try to hammer into your brain that Hitler was evil. My history book became a bit... opinionated when it came to the Holocaust.
  • How exactly could it be opinionated? Every damn book on the subject is vehemently against it.

Well, schoolbooks are normally rather objective, so was my history book. But when it came to the Holocaust, it seemed like the authors didn't want to leave any doubt that it was horrible.

Not that it wasn't justified, but it seemed rather odd, considering how objective it was before.

I don't think German sounds harsh, I just think its vowels are kind of awkward. Hard to navigate around.
  • Yeah, Japan is the nation that refuses to admit it did horrible things in WWII. Germany is the country where denying the Holocaust is an actual crime.

Also, how do you make Turkish coffee? You kill thousands of Armenian beans and then lie about if for a hundred years.

    Poot dispenser here
Regarding languages: We can look at the negative aspects of their related cultures:

English: Imperialism, absorption of other languages into itself.
French: Language of blood and rebellion.
Italian: The language of criminals, merchants and corrupt papacy.
German: The language of the Nazis.

Or, we can look at positive aspects:

English: A near-universal language that unites all free, educated peoples.
French: The language of beauty and art.
Italian: An epicenter of Western culture and art.
German: The language of science and engineering.

EDIT, @ last page: Germans are stereotyped as being excellent in engineering fields. Plus, the motto of AUDI AG (German car company that also owns Lamborghini) is "Vorsprung Durch Technik"- "Lead Through Technology."

Because you never know what you might see.
    >Yeah, Japan is the nation that refuses to admit it did horrible things in WWII.

Not the whole of Japan, just the far right.  I gather that the rest don't actually deny having done anything wrong, they just aren't exactly as apologetic as we'd perhaps like them to be, and still upset about having been nuked.
  • Oh my fucking god dad.

Please just SHUT THE FUCK UP and stop calling German "hideous Orc-Speech". Please. Just stop.
  • No dad, walking away in disgust is not "running away from the argument", it's "Not wanting to deal with a racist cunt anymore".

^^ Next time, say this to him:

Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul,
ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum ishi krimpatul.

  • " the language of passion, of art, of beauty?"

For a homophobe, that's kind of a gay thing to say.
  • Tell him french is gay. That should set off his rocker.
  • Obviously he'll just get mad and suggest Chagen have sex with it if it's so gay. Duh.
