ITT thread I will post ugly flags. You can also participate. To start, I'll post the flag of Laval, Quebec
One of the biggest no-noes on flag design is to have text in the flag, more so if the text is simply the name of the city. And what's with the two cubes? Wikipedia says they represent the L of Laval, but I'm sure there's better ways of doing that
Comments
At least the flag isn't monochrome.
Though we (as in human civilization, collectively) got rid of that one last year.
Not a flag, but a crest. Still hideous as hell.
Merošina, Serbia.
Ew.
Continuing the text on flag trend, here's Provo, Utah (This actually seems to be a problem with USA flags)
It looks like a toothpaste logo
Is Provo LBGT-friendly? My guess, based on its location, says probably not.
That Serbian city's crest looks like a very basic Flash or Photoshop job, just cleaned up slightly.
Are these flags? 'Cause they look like ugly logos of some old-town groceries.
They are, apparently. Though I really wasn't even aware that cities had flags until now.
This makes sense from the perspective of nations that have a feudal background, but it's pretty puzzling when applied to colonial nations.
Oddly, all Serbia's city and municipal flags and crests are from the 20th and 21st century, none of the old medieval ones have been preserved. Some of them attempt to emulate a heraldic style, while others attempt to be more modern (and usually end up failing, like the Merošina municipality).
Another terrible example is the municipality/town of Gornji Milanovac, which used to have these (quite tasteful and beautiful, IMO) symbols until 2009.
Then they were replaced with these, much to the chagrin of the people there.
Yeah, the flag is simply the "crest" (more like a logo) stamped onto a white background.
The old heraldry was beautiful. What were they thinking?
"And thus our land fell from the heavens, cleaving a pillar in twain." Alternatively "And from the fountain of blood sprung our land."
...Nope, I don't get it.
I wonder if I'll start a mess by claiming that socialist heraldry was nasty. At least when it's restricted to working tools, it's not that bad. But, you know. Yeeeeeah, go ahead, put out that a picture of a power plant. I'm sure The People will love it. Though Soviet coat of arms had that nice "Hello, We Plan To Take Over The World" vibe. I can't not appreciate the straightforwardness, you know.
But to be honest, when I compare it to the pictures you guys post in this thread, it's like art school was a prerequisite to join the Party.
Passive-aggressively trolling Hitler from beyond the grave?
You mean the coat of arms? No, ole' Adi is kinda a temporary setback in this regard.
It's more like, hmm... What were TVT terms for it? Red Right Hand? Card-Carrying Villain? I mean, it's like, you know, no matter how much they might say they only want peace or whatever, they just can't not make their agenda obvious. It's like, dunno, Saruman talking to Theoden's retinue, if Saruman stated his plans outright in the same sentence.
But that's getting out of topic, I guess.
I meant
which given the Ally-Soviet victory over Hitler...
Ah, so in this case I'm inclined to agree. Not only Adi's idea of the world was beaten in war, but also of the art. We'll not only defeat you, but spam the world with shitty "art" for that additional rub in the face. That, I admit, is quite trollific.
Hey, socialist heraldry can be quite beautiful if done right.
I like this, for example.
Hm, okay, I'm not saying it's so in every case. Individual cases can be quite not bad. It's the principle that's the ugliest, in a number of cases it was played around to achieve something pretty.
It's funny how when it comes to Japanese flags look more like subway logos: Kobe, Kumamoto prefecture, Nagano, Osaka, Tokyo prefecture, Yokohama, and Hiroshima. And this is only a small sample, virtually every flag in Japan is like that
At least there's no text in them, so props
The flag of the town/municipality of Svilajnac, Serbia.
A fucking silk beetle. A fucking ugly one, at that.
^^ Actually, those look like corporate or sports team logos.
^^^^ I see that that community features bridges over flowing waters, grain harvests, heavy machinery, and architecture designed by Frank Gehry.
Luckily, here people in certain offices seem not to drink as much as their Serbian equivalents. Thus if something's that bad, it's a promotional logo, or at worst old enough to not bother. Aaah... reminds me of that time when some fundies accused promo logo of a certain town of spreading Gay Satanism. It was the contour of old part of town - looked like a hand, with a red dot in the middle - and was in rainbow colours.
I wonder if @Evergreen would be interested in this thread.
I really do not go to this forum anymore do I.
Thanks for remembering me anyway.
I like attractive flags. Ugly flags don't interest me the same way ugly houses do.
The real estate thread is still at the top of my bookmarked threads list.
I have to get back to it soon.
