Yarrr, it be Talk Like A Pirate Day today, mateys!
Comments
I'd advis'ee that thou best get'ee acquainted with the West Country dialects.
An acquaintance of mine who worked (works?) at a pirate-related historical establishment in Salem, MA, said the following on Facebook (paraphrased): "For Talk Like a Pirate Day, I will talk like a normal person, because that's what pirates actually talked like for their time."
Suddenly the whole thing seemed a lot less funny, but I still felt really good. This is why I love being a history major.
Pirates talked like where they came from, which was anywhere and everywhere, but the stereotype draws very heavily on the dialect of English spoken by sailors from Bristol and Cornwall between about 1550 and 1750.
