Why do doctors who get into politics become kooks?
Or maybe it's just the crazy doctors who go into politics.
People going outside their area of expertise are often crazy hacks.
Also, to get anywhere in politics usually means starting young and spending a lot of your time climbing your way up the party ladder, so most politicians don't have time to do much in their nominal career. Margaret Thatcher was a research chemist and a lawyer, but it's not as if she did anything notable in either capacity.
