It's not that it bugs me so much as it confuses me. I can't even google it because every site gives a different description on it. What the hell is the illuminati? What's it's purpose? Do they really want to enslave everyone and bring about a "new world order"? While we're on the subject, what was Dan Brown talking about when he wrote about them? It's all so baffling. @_@

@Chagen: They existed, briefly, in Bavaria in the eighteenth century. They were basically just like the Freemasons, and they were eventually outlawed. All evidence suggests that that was actually the end of the group, though several other groups with similar names have existed in other parts of the world at various times. The accusation that they were actually a massive conspiracy (including supposedly being responsible for the French Revolution) was first made shortly after the group was outlawed.
