Two things make up all internet avatars

edited 2011-03-14 14:34:28 in General
Homestuck (especially trolls) and animesque. It's like no one cares about things that aren't Death Note or Terezi or something (I just picked 2 topics out of the blue there, not like every animesque avatar is Death note and every Homestuck avatar is Terezi)! Now don't get me wrong, I like Homestuck and in fact have a Homestuck avatar on the MSPA forums and lots of people like anime, but seriously. I only have that one Homeatar because it's THE MSPA FORUMS.

  • You're right! Everyone should use ponies instead.
  • This is obviously overstating things.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    Anime encompasses kinda a lot anyway.
  • That doesn't change that a lot of people use them, no matter how general. I mean, how many people use western animation avatars?
  • A few. You just need to look around the fora more.

    Because you never know what you might see.
    ^^ Well, over 28% of the posts in this thread so far, for starters.

    In fact, none of the individual avatars in this thread so far are wholly Japanese cartoons, only two of them are partially Japanese cartoons, and one of them is yours.
  • Homestuck is western animation.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    I don't feel like using a different avatar.  Sorry.

    In any case, you forgot all the freakin' ponies.  As well as all the prettyboys and prettygirls.

    Also, you may want to revise your statement to be "animesque" rather than "anime".
  • ^^ Well, I define western animation as cartoons made non animesquely, so to me it's just a webcomic.

    ^ What not animesque? :P

    Because you never know what you might see.
    ^^ I don't even know what "animesque" means anymore.  It gets applied to everything.

    Anyway, in reality I think the things that make up the most avatars are characters (fictional or otherwise, and especially from the waist or shoulders up).  Except on LiveJournal, where it's words, usually in the form of snarky jokes or trite platitudes.

    ^ Homestuck is a cartoon which isn't animesque.
  • It is, however, animesesque.

    /stupid meme
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    I don't get it... what meme is that?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Question for Reeceer6: Are the following animesque, and why or why not?
    * Gunnerkrigg Court
    * Avatar: the Last Airbender
    * Boondocks
    * Donkey Kong Country
  • ^^^It's kind of a fan joke that Andrew Hussie has a firm grasp on the "animes".
  • I thought the two things were going to be "Length" and "Width".

    As for the topic, there are a lot of fad followers, but a significant portion of people tend to have their own distinct theme / style when picking avatars.

  • Ahah!  My avatar isn't an anime avatar, because there's no Yotsuba&! anime!

    ...

    -cries because there's no Yotsuba&! anime and there never will be-
  • Well, my biggest frame of reference is the TV Tropes forum, but I've also seen lots of webcomic avatars, as well as actors/actresses/models...

    And one nazi bird.
  • I use Super Mario Kart sprites :)

    (void)
    Drawn/animated things, like touhous and the animes and the homestucks and the ponies, tend to make better avatars because they have cleaner lines than, say, photographs, and this makes them resize better.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    And I thought that one thing makes up all internet avatars: pixels.
  • Also Homestuck's rough art looks cleaner when it is resized.

  • ^^^ ...maybe.
