Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
YOU ARE FALLING DOWN THE PITS OF NERDYNESS!

    THE NEXT STEP IS LARPING!

    THEN FURRY FANDOM!

    THEN FURRY LARPING!
  • They're somethin' else.
MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES!
  • Furries are lower on the hierarchy than LARPers? When'd that happen?
  • They're somethin' else.
Any video games I should play that could help introduce me to DND concepts?

Once you get into furry territory, you can't go much lower.

^Uhh...Baldur's Gate and KOTOR? They both use D&D's mechanics and the former is a D&D game.
  • ^^ I'd love to help but I only played a few sessions of a very combat heavy campaign ages ago. >.>

    ^ True...
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
^^^You could try some NetHack or something if you want the authentic dungeon-crawling experience.

    What edition are you playing?
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
It sort of baffles me that D&D continues to survive. I know it was the first one to the pool and everything, but so many games out there have simpler systems and better content.
  • They're somethin' else.
    4th.

And yes, I loves me Nethack. Loves it so. I'll try Baldurs and Kotor. Any particular Baldurs?
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Play the first one and then import your character into the second one.

Hm... I'm not much of a PC gamer, but I'll try and get a hold of it. Anything in a console?

Better yet, is that Capcom arcade game any good?
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^KOTOR was on the Xbox, but you really, really, want to play that and BG on the PC.

They're all ancient games anyway. Unless your computer was made before 2001, I'm pretty sure it could play them.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I'm new, and I'm wondering what I've just got myself into.

Since you're playing 4th Edition, the rules aren't especially complicated, so you won't have to worry about getting confused, I hope. What you've gotten yourself into, for better or worse, is probably going to be more dependent on the types of people you're playing with.

I'm not sure how much Baldur's Gate would help you to understand the 4e system, though; the rules are based on either Advanced Dungeons and Dragons or 3rd Edition. Depending on the setting your group plays, it might help your understanding of the mythos, though.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics might help you get in the mindset, if not the rules. 4e is pretty heavy on tactical movement and positioning and such--I can't imagine it being played without a rules mat and minis of some sort (even if it's just graph paper and legos--more awesome than it sounds).

The main difficulty is probably going to be remember what conditional modifiers are on you at any given time--there can be a lot of them, depending. Aside from that, it's important to be familiar with your teammates' capabilities and see how they line up with your own. (And if you're playing a melee character, be sure to set up flanking--having another character precisely across from you with a monster between you--as often as you can. Doubly so if there's a rogue in the party, but even if there isn't, that +2 to hit matters a lot more than it seems.)

But you never had any to begin with.
Baldur's Gate was based on modified AD&D 2e rules. Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 were based on 3e and 3.5e respectively. Not sure if there's ever been a game based on 4e.

Since I know 3.5e, does NWN2 actually play like a meatspace 3.5e campaign?

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^From what little I played before I got bored of it, no. For starters, it's modified. Also, you're in control of everything the party does, but still don't really have any freedom because it's a video game.

So do skill points in Sense Motive actually do anything?
  • Sense motive ain't in the game at all. So no?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Bear in mind, there are a lot of changes to the system.
