I just joined a Dungeons and Dragons group
I'm new, and I'm wondering what I've just got myself into.

^Uhh...Baldur's Gate and KOTOR? They both use D&D's mechanics and the former is a D&D game.
^ True...
And yes, I loves me Nethack. Loves it so. I'll try Baldurs and Kotor. Any particular Baldurs?
Better yet, is that Capcom arcade game any good?
They're all ancient games anyway. Unless your computer was made before 2001, I'm pretty sure it could play them.
Final Fantasy Tactics might help you get in the mindset, if not the rules. 4e is pretty heavy on tactical movement and positioning and such--I can't imagine it being played without a rules mat and minis of some sort (even if it's just graph paper and legos--more awesome than it sounds).
The main difficulty is probably going to be remember what conditional modifiers are on you at any given time--there can be a lot of them, depending. Aside from that, it's important to be familiar with your teammates' capabilities and see how they line up with your own. (And if you're playing a melee character, be sure to set up flanking--having another character precisely across from you with a monster between you--as often as you can. Doubly so if there's a rogue in the party, but even if there isn't, that +2 to hit matters a lot more than it seems.)
