  Yeah, it's pretty annoying. Most of my teachers at college have at least been nice enough to say "that's not actually true, but if you act like it is for now, it'll be easier later."

  This happens every goddamn chapter in my syntax class. You learn one way to make parse trees before being told yet again that that's not how it actually works.
