Yep, I think that makes the most sense too. If someone is your friend and you are not romantically linked to him or her in anyway, then I do not know why gender really needs to be mentioned there at all.
What I find more confusing is when some people use "girlfriends" to refer to female friends since girlfriend/boyfriend have fairly set definitions in my mind. Significant other seems like a clearer term to use for a romantic partner to me for that reason.
