Music in videogames

edited 2011-07-30 10:36:12 in General
I feel bad for not noticing it, unless it's really iconic or good. I mostly just get told that a videogame has good music, even though all I hear is decent atmospheric stuff.

I've noticed some Kingdom Hearts themes, the music from Nier and Deadly Premonition, and that's about it as far as  relatively recent videogame music goes.

    Kichigai birthday!!
    This.

The last time when I was playing a game and actually noticed the music was IWBTG, with the Mecha Birdo fight
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
You aren't supposed to think about it while playing the actual game. If you were, it wouldn't be doing its job quite right.

Indeed. Also, to be honest, I think that most soundtracks only work well in context. Listening to them out of said context draws something out of the whole deal.

    There're exceptions, of course.

@Noimporta: Internet's slow. Can you quote or something, please?
  • Another great piece

  • I like the music from Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, uh...Fire Emblem, Golden Sun...well, anyways, I like video game music.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
One of my favorite recent vidya pieces.

  • When it comes to incredibly dramatic music, nothing beats this.
  • I figure the only thing that makes video game music more memorable than soundtracks in other media is the fact you'll be hearing it for hours on end repeatedly.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The first song that plays in Devil Survivor.

Goes very well with the opening scene, but I was too lazy to find a video with it.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Shin Megami Tensei in general is famous for awesome music.

Yeah, I know. I really need to play more Megaten games.
  • I'd post some music I like, but I have no idea how to post YouTube videos on here. =\

Persona 4 music is either terrible or completely forgettable.  Well... not forgettable in a bad way, but forgettable in the "it contributed reasonably well to the scene but I never noticed it" way.  However, all the vocal music in that game sucks hard.  Because it has vocals and you have to hear it hundreds of times over the course of the game.  Though I think that's just two songs.  Maybe.

To be or not to be? That is the question.
That might be the problem for recent commercial games for me. (With the exception of NieR, the Armored Core series, the Dept Heaven series, Demon's Souls, the Shin Megami Tensei games, BlazBlue, Melty Blood, and Team Fortress 2.)

Doujin games are an exception, however. There are a lot of awesome music in that particular gaming scene.
  • I am seriously loving Assassin's Creed soundtrack for all the games, there is not one I don't like
  • I turn off the sound on games for portable systems because I feel weird if I'm playing a portable system that's emitting sound for some reason.  Otherwise, music stays on, though I usually don't pay much attention to it.

Only video games with music that I care about are music games.
  • probably human
To me, the best video game music, when played out of context, immediately makes you think of whatever scene/place/fight it played in.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
IJBM: That threads about videogame music inevitably get a bunch of youtube embeds. :P

    > I usually turn off the music... >.>

  • Ohh I just love Persona 4 music~. I have no idea what they're saying half the time, but it's also so catchy, so I make up new things to sing along every time. n/////n
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I just started listening to the Assassin's Creed 2 OST, and I think my ears are orgasming.
  • This thread makes me want to cut. :(
  • You can change. You can.
    why is electi sad :<
