So, I'm reading this article about how Christopher Nolan is the director of the generation. About how we get "one director like him"...

It just opens my eyes a lot. As someone whose goal is to be a successful filmmaker, it's just so awing how much of an amazing director this guy is. Just like...how does he do it. Really, he's probably my biggest inspiration.

Enough gushing from me...

Nolan is too much of a New Hollywood director for this world. He'll die of cancer.

    Cancer of awesome.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I got a question: Has he done anything besides the two Batman movies? Because just judging from those, I don't get what all the love is about.
  • Memento, Inception, and Kangaroo Jack.
  • They're somethin' else.
    Inception, Memento, Following... um...

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Following.  Memento.  The Prestige.  Inception.

    Dude can do no wrong.

    i'm slow  :(
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Memento was amazing, and while inception was a bit above average, I don't see how it's some mind-blowing masterpiece.

^ I may have to cut you.

Welp, you don't like superheroes, so it's not exactly as if those are gonna make an impact on you. Specially as you don't like darker stuff either.

As for other works, Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Following + the two batman films. I think that's his whole filmography so far.

Memento was amazing, and while inception was a bit above average, I don't see how it's some mind-blowing masterpiece.

funnily, I felt about it the other way around. I felt that Memento was too tied to its gimmick to be anything but a great experiment in storytelling, rather than a good story, whereas Inception was more loose about its dreams mechanics. It was easier to follow too. Overall, I'd definetly say that Inception is a superior movie. Mostly because of dat metafictional comment. <3

^^^I think inception was good. Its reception just seemed to think it was a lot more complex than it was.
  • You can change. You can.
Ah, well, that I can agree with. I thought you were doubting the quality of the movie, not its complexity.

I should mention that these days, people overreact to complexity and make it out bigger than it is

    (Example: Lost)
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, I loved all the metafiction and stuff.

I suppose it just bothers me that people like it for entirely the wrong reasons.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I found that I understood Inception well enough upon first viewing. It took a while longer than usual to piece it all together, but I got there.

Plus, I just loved paradox, bitch!
  • You can change. You can.
I...I kinda watched it at 12:00 AM after a very tiring day with my girlfriend sleeping on my shoulder (She already watched it thrice)

So I didn't understood the last bits or the mechanics of dreaming very well until rewatch with my sister. We then pieced the whole thing together.

    Good times.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Also, Inception would make an awesome multiplayer game.
  • You can change. You can.
Hence why Nolan is going for one.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    ... wait, seriously?
  • You can change. You can.
Mind you, I said going for one. Dunno how done it is

Best part: It's not an adaptation. Meaning that we could probably see different inception/extraction missions.

Its not superheroes and dark I hate--unless you're going to tell me Ultraman, He-Man and Megaman aren't superheroes and 3x3 Eyes, James Bond (sometimes) and R-Type aren't dark. I didn't even dislike Burton's Batman, if you remember.

And I've seen the Prestige and didn't think very highly of it either--at the time, I thought its gimmick of jumping around from scene to scene in the story's timeline was artsy and pretentious, coming off like an attempt to gussy up a really rather straightforward story. But since he does almost the same goddamn thing in the Batman movies (not the timeline part but he does have a way of just constantly jumping from scene to scene, sometimes in the middle of dialogue), I guess that's just how he rolls.
  • You can change. You can.
Yes, but mix superheroes and dark, and...
  • I'm not a fan of Nolan :/ -ducks-
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
...and what? You get plaque build-up?

You can quit working the "they're two bad things that go worse together?" angle you've got. That's not the case.
  • You can change. You can.
    Ah.

    Well, as you wish.

I'm not a fan of Nolan :/ -ducks-

    Elaborate, please? I'm just interested.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
The only problem I had with Inception was the mental midgets going 'ohgodsocomplicated'. The Dark Knight was actually more complicated (to its detriment) than Inception was and nobody said shit!

In any case, Nolan's a treasure house. He's another of the new era of film brat, and it shows since I refuse to believe that for Batman Begins he didn't just polish off a lot of the sets from Blade Runner.

That said, my favorite director of the time is probably Guillermo Del Toro, then Nolan, then... Sam Raimi I guess.

Where are these "new era" directors coming from?

I just want to know, because I want to be so much like them.

See, I think what happened is that people mistook one small ambiguity for extreme complexity. The Dark Knight is complex, but nothing's left ambiguous (IIRC; it's been awhile since I last saw it).

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Well, they started with Lucas, Spielberg, (and to a lesser extent) Sam Raimi in the late seventies.

That kind of opened the flood gates and later guys like Tarantino and Robert Rodrgiuez came in who grew up on seventies exploitation films rather that 40s serials and slapstick comedy. Their affection for thos kinds of films combined with an appreciation of actual masterpieces is what sent them skyward. Initially, a lot of critics thought Tarantino's shlock-love was something he would grow out of, rather than what actually identified him as a director.

^That's a pretty fair assessment. Really though, I can explain every plot twist in Inception.

    "We have to go deeper!"

    "Oh yes, deeper Cobb! Yes!"

Besides Nolan, who are the current greats?
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
    JJ Abrams

I'm a fan of Edgar Wright.
