Ryuutama seems pretty close, though I'm not sure if it's closer to JRPG or fantasy anime. (Or how big is the practical difference between being inspired by either.)

Ryuutama takes inspiration from Miyazaki films and fantasy, but not as much from videogames. I think.

Aye. I could come up with like a few more of these, but they all have even less to do with JRPGs. And one'd think it's all the same, huh. I guess it's kind of fuzzy around the edges with all those RPG-mechanics-verse fantasy anime?

to some extent, yeah, similarities and genre labels are inherently fuzzy

trying to understand the Starfinder 2e classes, as overall concepts. with the help of the video linked at the bottom of this post.

(n.b. I've never played Starfinder before, not even 1e)

Envoy - charismatic leader type i guess. for some reason i'm picturing X or Zero (from the Mega Man franchise) commanding a squadron of Maverick Hunters (ironically, unlike than their solo activities in their games). this concept is of course more broadly applicable.

Mystic - i don't really get this one yet. i know it's supposed to be a healer plus spellcaster of any tradition. i just don't have any reference characters in my head.

Operative - i can totally imagine like all my favorite sniper or sniper-adjacent characters fitting here. in fact i started out being curious about Starfinder character creation by wanting to recreate Shiroko Sunaookami (Blue Archive), but i soon realized that Sinon (Sword Art Online II), Reki (Aria the Scarlet Ammo), and Nina Avelin (Circlet Princess) would fit here, each occupying a slightly different niche. there's other ways to play this character, too -- sniper is only one of the six different subclasses, some of which are more rogue-like (as in the classic fantasy RPG rogue class).

Solarian - i've never played kineticist nor exemplar in Pathfinder, but this class gives me something like "magical space monk" vibes. combat focused and strength-centric class, but creates their own weapon from their magical spirit whatnot, and it can change element. oddly, the only actual reference i have for this might be Starfire from Teen Titans, known for firing energy blasts from her hands.

Soldier - the concept here is pretty straightforward, you are a fighter (in the general sense, not the D&D/PF sense), but you also work for various objectives, including protecting people and stuff, (i.e. you aren't just doing combat for the fun of combat). probably have good armor and gear. for some reason my mental image is Shepard from Mass Effect. maybe specifically femShep, probably because that's how i first encountered the character in online discourse (considering i have never played the game). i guess other people could probably imagine stuff like Spehs Marines or such.

Witchwarper - a wizard/sorceror with an apparent focus on battlefield control and some other stuff. honestly i'm not really getting this either.

i think i'm just a little lost on the "space magic" classes. maybe there's some inspiration characters from the Star Wars franchise and such, but i'm also poorly versed in Star Wars.

Oh, this is a much better video as far as coming up with character concepts goes.

Also I wonder whether Homura could be represented as a witchwarper.

Starfinder as a concept is so far away from my usual genre expectations that I don't have any character idea off the bat. Envoy sounds fun, though.

After that one most disgusting adventure of the year, this year I wanted to try something more subdued, like a character drama, but ultimately I haven't sent anything to that RPG scenario contest I've been partaking in. Also, I wanted it to be Fading Suns because I have a soft spot for that game.

The idea I came up with was something like a Gothic novel type of drama with a chance for a positive ending: there's an old knight with no living family spending his final days brooding in a dark backwater mansion, until a young man shows up claiming to be his unknown grandson. Kid grew up with his dead mother's family who hated him for their daughter's mesalliance and now that he can travel on his own he's trying to find a place. Drama ensues. (The setting would let this pass, I think.) Then there's a social and political angle to it (who inherits after the old man?), secondary characters with personal stakes in the drama, a looming barbarian raid, and your typical Gothic angle of a seeming curse cast over the land that's actually a result of an old radiochemical weapons dumping ground that nobody knows they happen to live over.

Now, as proud as I may be of the premise, I have this problem that there's precious little angle to the player characters. I could go the easy route and assume they are the kid's party. That might cut out a few NPCs (to be replaced with PCs), but I don't know if the NPCs' agendas could or not be replaced with the PCs' own. I could also have the PCs be pre-generated, but frankly, I have never liked that.

So altogether I have like a stage set for drama, but don't quite know which roles to give to the actors, if you allow me such flowery language.

I guess the easy way would be to play it over a few times and I know you guys would help out if I asked (I don't really have anyone else to ask), but I don't want to dump that on your heads. So, you don't have to even answer, but I wanted to share to make thinking easier.

My first idea for a Starfinder character was "oh i guess i can try playing the various sci-fi anime protags", and my second thought is "this feels like a more unconstrained kitchen sink of sci-fi settings than the usual fantasy kitchen sink".

here is a list of all the TTRPG systems i now know of that are inspired by JRPGs (of various kinds)

    8-Bit Dungeon
    Anima Prime
BREAK!! (n.b. not to be confused with Strike!)
    Dragon and Warrior
    Fabula Ultima
Gishes & Goblins (? not sure this belongs here)
    Mystics of Gaia (German-only)
    Pokémon Tabletop Adventures
    Retail Magic
    Shepherds
    Super Console
    Sword World
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Destiny (not yet released?)
    Twilight Sword
    Ys: Age of Heroes

    bonus mention:
The Fault in Our Fates - supplement for the FATE system that is inspired by the fault VN series (i.e. fault milestone one, etc.)

any others? i'm curious to know

a quick search of YouTube shows the following other possibilities:
Chive Knights (probably named after Onion Knights from FF3)
    Last Arc (with tactical elements)
    Legends of Akeroth
    Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying
    Skies Above

    other:
    Convictor Drive (inspired by tokusatsu)

also at least one person (a YouTuber named Cozy RPG Reviews) claims that Ryuutama inspired Fabula Ultima

Since this thread is a bit more lively recently, here's a Humble Bundle for Fria Ligan games.

Hey Glenn, I'm told there's such a thing as Neon Odyssey in the works. Looks like a cheap attempt by Wiz of the Coast to cash on Starfinder popularity, which is why I figured you might be curious.

I say it looks like an attempt to cash on Starfinder, because ironically D&D already had Spelljammer, which inspired Starfinder, but also Spelljammer had more of a classic fantasy (In Space!) vibe than sci-fi vibe.

It also looks way stupider and too colorful for sensible people, but as this is an aesthetic detail, it's a matter of taste.
