(n.b. I've never played Starfinder before, not even 1e)
Envoy - charismatic leader type i guess. for some reason i'm picturing X or Zero (from the Mega Man franchise) commanding a squadron of Maverick Hunters (ironically, unlike than their solo activities in their games). this concept is of course more broadly applicable.
Mystic - i don't really get this one yet. i know it's supposed to be a healer plus spellcaster of any tradition. i just don't have any reference characters in my head.
Operative - i can totally imagine like all my favorite sniper or sniper-adjacent characters fitting here. in fact i started out being curious about Starfinder character creation by wanting to recreate Shiroko Sunaookami (Blue Archive), but i soon realized that Sinon (Sword Art Online II), Reki (Aria the Scarlet Ammo), and Nina Avelin (Circlet Princess) would fit here, each occupying a slightly different niche. there's other ways to play this character, too -- sniper is only one of the six different subclasses, some of which are more rogue-like (as in the classic fantasy RPG rogue class).
Solarian - i've never played kineticist nor exemplar in Pathfinder, but this class gives me something like "magical space monk" vibes. combat focused and strength-centric class, but creates their own weapon from their magical spirit whatnot, and it can change element. oddly, the only actual reference i have for this might be Starfire from Teen Titans, known for firing energy blasts from her hands.
Soldier - the concept here is pretty straightforward, you are a fighter (in the general sense, not the D&D/PF sense), but you also work for various objectives, including protecting people and stuff, (i.e. you aren't just doing combat for the fun of combat). probably have good armor and gear. for some reason my mental image is Shepard from Mass Effect. maybe specifically femShep, probably because that's how i first encountered the character in online discourse (considering i have never played the game). i guess other people could probably imagine stuff like Spehs Marines or such.
Witchwarper - a wizard/sorceror with an apparent focus on battlefield control and some other stuff. honestly i'm not really getting this either.
i think i'm just a little lost on the "space magic" classes. maybe there's some inspiration characters from the Star Wars franchise and such, but i'm also poorly versed in Star Wars.
Also I wonder whether Homura could be represented as a witchwarper.
After that one most disgusting adventure of the year, this year I wanted to try something more subdued, like a character drama, but ultimately I haven't sent anything to that RPG scenario contest I've been partaking in. Also, I wanted it to be Fading Suns because I have a soft spot for that game.
The idea I came up with was something like a Gothic novel type of drama with a chance for a positive ending: there's an old knight with no living family spending his final days brooding in a dark backwater mansion, until a young man shows up claiming to be his unknown grandson. Kid grew up with his dead mother's family who hated him for their daughter's mesalliance and now that he can travel on his own he's trying to find a place. Drama ensues. (The setting would let this pass, I think.) Then there's a social and political angle to it (who inherits after the old man?), secondary characters with personal stakes in the drama, a looming barbarian raid, and your typical Gothic angle of a seeming curse cast over the land that's actually a result of an old radiochemical weapons dumping ground that nobody knows they happen to live over.
Now, as proud as I may be of the premise, I have this problem that there's precious little angle to the player characters. I could go the easy route and assume they are the kid's party. That might cut out a few NPCs (to be replaced with PCs), but I don't know if the NPCs' agendas could or not be replaced with the PCs' own. I could also have the PCs be pre-generated, but frankly, I have never liked that.
So altogether I have like a stage set for drama, but don't quite know which roles to give to the actors, if you allow me such flowery language.
I guess the easy way would be to play it over a few times and I know you guys would help out if I asked (I don't really have anyone else to ask), but I don't want to dump that on your heads. So, you don't have to even answer, but I wanted to share to make thinking easier.
a quick search of YouTube shows the following other possibilities:
Chive Knights (probably named after Onion Knights from FF3)
Last Arc (with tactical elements)
Legends of Akeroth
Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying
Skies Above
other:
Convictor Drive (inspired by tokusatsu)
also at least one person (a YouTuber named Cozy RPG Reviews) claims that Ryuutama inspired Fabula Ultima
I say it looks like an attempt to cash on Starfinder, because ironically D&D already had Spelljammer, which inspired Starfinder, but also Spelljammer had more of a classic fantasy (In Space!) vibe than sci-fi vibe.
It also looks way stupider and too colorful for sensible people, but as this is an aesthetic detail, it's a matter of taste.
