IanExMachina's Drink Diary. (Or a steady descent into alcoholism.)

edited 2011-10-23 16:18:33 in Liveblogging
I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
In this thread I'll just be posting what I drink, and my thoughts upon it.

Franziskaner Weissbeer.

I am drinking Bavaraian (brewed in Munich) wheat beer.
Whilst I prefer stronger/bitter/malty/hoppy ale flavours there is something quite moreish about it.
(For anyone who cares it is 5.0% and fraziskaner means Franciscan monk).

    Warlocks Broth (Shepherd Neame Brewery)

    (No picture available)

A halloween seasonal dark bitter ale, you can taste the bitter roast of the hops with a small biscuit after taste.

Not bad, I like the roast flavour especially, however I have had better.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
What are your  thoughts on Hobgoblin?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I quite like it, Wychwood are petty good with their ales however I'd prefer it is it were a tiny bit less sweet, although it is well balanced I just prefer it bitter.
  • Ian - Do you only drink beer? I've not drunk much beer since I was at university. Any thoughts on gin, which is my drink of choice?

I tend to prefer beer although I do drink wine cider/perry quite often too.

As for spirits, I'm not as much of a fan really.
Stuff like gin is ok (sloe gin is very nice and I've made my own before) but whisky/vodka/anything tasting like aniseed I don't drink.

Shepherd Neame's Autumn Blaze (Seasonal Autumn Ale) 4%

Lighter and thinner than I was expecting for an Autumn ale.
Quite bitter and I like that, however I'd rather it have been darker and heavier.
So overall not bad but I've had better.
  • Yesterday I shared a pitcher of beer with my dad at a brew pub near my university he used to go to when I was three. It was a good day.

That sounds like a good time!
    What was the beer like?
(And if you can remember the name:p?)
  • The beer was fine. I haven't developed a taste for beer very well, so it's hard for me to decide if I like a beer more than another. Unless it's light beer. Blech.

I can't remember really, I think it was some kind of IPA.

What do you mean by light beer?
IPAs are quite nice but I prefer the thicker darker ales myself.
  • The watery swill that's essentially the beer version of diet soda?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    So lager right?
    (Budweiser etc?)
  • I guess.

I really don't know much about beer in general.

    Wychwood's Hobgoblin 5.2%

Well balanced and very pleasant to drink due to it being very very smooth, very light hint of fruit whilst mainly being 'biscuitty'.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Well I'd call lagers basically weak and flavourless so I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same thing.
Most of the American beers we get imported are lagers like Coors and Budweiser.

    Hoegaarden Rosée (3%)

Wheat beer with a raspberry flavour.
The raspberry fruitiness is the main flavour but you can taste the smoothness of the wheat beer.
A change for me really as it isn't ale/bitter.

Good for people who don't like 'normal' tasting alcoholic drinks. (It is pretty much an alcopop.)

    Leffe Blonde (6.6%)
Similar in style to the Franziskaner.
Wheat/barley flavour, but lighter and sweeter.
Not bad but the flavour of the Franziskaner is smoother and fuller.

    Old Speckled Hen 5.2%
    Bitter and malty.
    Quite light and refreshing really.
    Overall very pleasant.

    Hatherwood Premium Bitter

    BITTER

Bitter (obviously), although a tiny bit of sweet/fruitiness.
Pretty cheap, but pretty good too.

  • This is a bit late now but the Hoegaarden Rosee looks tempting. I've had regular Hoegaarden a couple of times; it wasn't bad.

  • Sweet-tasting beers are wonderful. Liefmans Fruitesse/Mort Subite(cherry-flavoured beer) is my fav.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.

    ^^
The Rosee was ok in taste, however I felt it too fizzy akin to a cheap sparkling water.

  • Glaives are better.

I want that Hobgoblin ruby ale.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    > Good for people who don't like 'normal' tasting alcoholic drinks. (It is pretty much an alcopop.)

Maybe I'll have to try this.  Sometime.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.

The fact it is also a wheat beer beneath the sweetness makes it really smooth too.

  • Dual wield sweet and bitter beers for maximum heresy.

  • No rainbow star
The only sweet beer I've had was bland

    Homemade Wine ???%

It tastes lightish and fruity, it seems quite strong.
Not so sure about the after taste though.
