  • Good for you. Unfortunately, the world does not run on your opinions.
  • "I always thought the point of art was to evoke an emotional response of some sort."

    This too.

Well, you're wrong Chagen. It's as simple as that. It is not on your shoulders to determine the point of art. You're opinion is wrong. That's all there is to it.

    I'm partial to Merda d'artista.

    Kichigai birthday!!
    @AHR

C'mon, there's no need to be that harsh

^ Reading the Wikipedia's article it said that the cans may not contain actual shit. I have to admit I was a bit offended

AHR: Yet, Vivi herself, did not state that that was her opinion.

"The point of art is not for it to understood."

No where do I see any quantifying this as an opinion.

Yet, I must quantify my opinion, because this forum has an extreme double standard against me.
  • Art is an imitation of life.  There's a lot about life we don't understand.  Therefore it makes perfect sense for some art to make no sense whatsoever in the conventional sense.
  • edited 2011-07-10 18:45:53

I admit to having a bias towards abstract stuff. From a concrete perspective, it doesn't make much sense, but somehow, done right, your subconscious just "gets it".

Of course, not everything reaches that level and you could just realize it's all a bunch of bullshit.

"I always thought the point of art was to evoke an emotional response of some sort."

    Sounds right.

  • Glaives are better.

Eventually I'm going to see if it's possible to actually firebomb a website.

If you try to open DeviantArt and your screen gets covered with soot, you'll know that I've succeeded.

  • "Well, you're wrong Chagen. It's as simple as that. It is not on your shoulders to determine the point of art. You're opinion is wrong. That's all there is to it."

As I said before, you made your opinion on art abundantly clear. Is it somehow right because you do it?

This forum really does have a large Double Standard against me.
  • You could paint a firebomb and we might see it as a daily deviation
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
    >The
point of art, to me, is to detail something in some way. Whether is be a
character, event, place, or something else, it details some thing. If
it's not understandable, then it doesn't have a point.

That's the thing, it IS understandable. The purpose of abstraction is to provoke thought in a way that would be impossible in anything resembling reality. It's muddling the message on purpose to make you think.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
"No where do I see any quantifying this as an opinion."

That's because people don't want to have to say "this is an opinion!" after every unsourced sentence they type.

Anyway, I personally do define ar as "something that evokes emotion."
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Art depends on the viewer and creator.

Both add meaning to something and draw at the same time, there is no universal definition of art.
  • Glaives are better.

I have no talent with a pencil or tablet.

With gasoline, though, I'm the next Michaelangelo.

Yet you guys yourselves put the onus on me to do it, and when I happen to not do it, I am punished severely for it.

    Thumped.
  • "I SAID THAT YOU DO NOT DECIDE WHAT THE POINT OF ART IS. I DID NOT SAY WHAT I THOUGHT THE POINT OF ART IS."

"The point of art is not for it to understood."

I think that chocolate looks too much like poop.

    Opinions, anyone?

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    @Chagen: I personally don't.

@Vivi: Cut that shit out NOW.

    Fine. Let me rephrase.

"I don't think the point of art is for it to be understood. It could be, but in most probably is not, considering how subjective art is"
  • "Yet you guys yourselves put the onus on me to do it, and when I happen to not do it, I am punished severely for it."

Your rhetoric often implies everyone else has bad taste for not sharing yours.

  • Has friends besides tanks now
Hey. Hey guys. Question: Does anyone actually ever listen to me?
  • Oh fun a definition of art debate. /sarcasm

The thing about the image in the OP is that there are small things like the mac buttons on the top left of the paper that make it more that just an image typewriter.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    I listen to you Everest.

But, c'mon, this is pretty entertaining.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    -raises hand-

I stopped posting here for a reason.
  • ""I don't think the point of art is for it to be understood. It could be, but in most probably is not, considering how subjective art is""

    Thank you.

"Your rhetoric often implies everyone else has bad taste for not sharing yours."

  • Chocolate only looks like poop if you have some major digestive problems.  Give it harder edges and a bit of shine to make it look more chocolatey.
