The Forum Unification and Contrariety Kommittee

I think we as a whole want to stray from our past, and we no longer want to be labeled as the "thrown out trash of Tv Tropes". The continuation of imported drama, and the reputation of this forum being the graveyard of banned tropers should stop. I've seen countless times where someone longs for independence from The Site That Must Not Be Named, and I have to agree. So I created this.

This Kommittee, and all of it's members, shall ensure the standard of independence from that site, that so many of us desire. We will use this thread to discuss ways in which we can improve both the creativity and independence of the forum, as well as complaints about the importing and exporting of drama that tends to happen.

But not all of us are benned tropers, nor even dissenters. While I agree that what this place needs is independence, I'd rather you don't try to speak for all of as a whole.

Also, treating TvT as The Site that Must Not Be Named doesn't help in the slightest. For one what this place should do is treat it like another site where they do have a userbase, like Something Awful and the like. You're giving it importance when you call it like that, when the point is that we shouldn't care about that site more than we care about any other site.

Of course, my opinion, blah blah.
  • But not all of us are benned tropers

But we do have such reputation. Well, I do know at least one troper who thinks so.

Anyhow, we don't have many non-tropers, so I suggest viral advertisements and spamming.

I don't think I will ever view this site as independent. Well, it's not like it matters to me much.

    1. I said the reputation of having a bunch of banned tropers, not that it actually is true.

    2. The Site that Must Not Be Named thing was a one-off joke that is not meant to be said ever again, just to clarify.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
^^^ As in big, bright, epileptic viral advertisements?
  • I am not sure if this would work, but maybe we could have a place here for liveblogs. I think that could certainly receive more attention here than they might on TV Tropes if they had a separate category. I also feel like they would help the site seem less negative. I am not sure about this though and I wonder if they would be best suited to be placed somewhere besides just another category.

I am thinking that adding another category for IJBMer joint activities might be a good idea. I think that in such a category people could set up schedules for playing online games together, work jointly on other projects, or organize things like writing contests and the such. Again, I think that having such a category would probably only make sense if people actually posted there. Obviously, I imagine that other people need to express a willingness to have that category before it could be justified.

I think that either of these ideas might help us become a bit more independent by giving people more things to do here, but of course, that would depend upon other people actually wanting to post in either category.

    Vivi,

I definitely agree with this. If there is some other way I could help with this, I would be glad to be of assistance.
  • Is there anything this site can offer that might make it attractive to non-TV Tropes users? If not, I don't think it'll be able to be independent.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
I said the reputation of having a bunch of banned tropers, not that it
    actually is true.

But we do have a bunch of ex-tropers of the involuntary kind here. That's actually one of the problem's of IJBM.

On that note, we have a Team Fortress 2 group now.

Well, it's gotten better Nyarly. GB doesn't post here, and I think one or two other banned tropers who have posted here don't any more.

    You can change. You can.
@Stormtroper: My point is more along the lines of "Not all of us are even dissenters who hate the site or think that it's overrated or whatever" some of us still like it and it seems over the top to go all "LOL let's treat it as shit"

If you don't like it, it's fine, but giving it any attention is not going to help in the slightest. Importing drama should be shot down regardless of the site where it comes and getting new members is entirely up to how we, the users and the staff promote it and mention it.

^But GB always hated this place. -shrug-

GB has posted here though. And I don't think you are understanding Juan. We know that a lot of us don't hate the site, or don't care, or still like it. We are saying that a lot of people on Tv Tropes THINK that we hate them and we are all banned tropers.

^^^^^ But it's still an unfounded reputation. I'm counting 7 banned ex-tropers who post with a semblance of regularity:

    • Tnu
    • Chagen
    • Bon Sequitur
    • snowbull
    • Snowfoxofdeath (assuming he hasn't been unbanned)
    • GuyInWhite (sort of, he was unbanned here for about a day after getting banned there, but he was also ban evading, so...)
    • GuitarBizarre

^^ Fair enough, I didn't mean to say that.
  • Snowfoxofdeath has been unbanned, and I don't really think snowbull should be counted.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
    Snowfoxofdeath was banned?

    and Vorpy.

    You can change. You can.
Yes, he has, but just a couple of times out of boredom.

and to expand on what Noimporta said, we're not getting independency if we contantly rant about it and make threads about TvT and how we should be independent of it. We just...should act normally and try to bring in new users. If it comes, it will come and we'll make it happen, but forcing it won't take us nowhere.

We have a good staff and a userbase that is getting better and better about its own problems and I believe that we'll get places if we just don't go on and on about it /Hypocritical humor.

^Vorpy poste a couple of days ago. she's not banned in the slightest.

  • Snowfoxofdeath was banned before because he(she?) shared an IP with...someone.
  • You can change. You can.
snowfoxofdeath was temporarily banned because her brother used her computer and vandalized the wiki, as I recall.

snowbull was banned and he counts, regardless of the reasons.

guitar Bizarre barely potsts so no, he doesn't count.

Bon Sequitur, Tnu and Chagen do count.

Guy in white was banned from here too.
  • a little muffled
No, she let her cousin use her computer.
  • You can change. You can.
    Oh, 'K. gotcha.

The point is not which tropers are banned and for what, and if they come here.

The point is that people have the idea that we are the leftover for banned tropers.
  • Does this mean I am the cancer that is killing this place?
  • You can change. You can.
and my point is simply that by giving it too much importance to the subject, you're making it harder for this site to be accessible and enjoyable.

And because this Komittee purpose is something that we've been talking about for a long time already and is entirely redundant as importing drama is something that has always been in the rules. If you want to bring in changes to the rules, there's a forum changes thread just at the top of the forum.
  • So, are you discussing this site's reputation on TVT, or how to make it independent?
  • Considering that its unlikely a nontroper will even discover this place, is making it culturally distinct from TvTropes even that big of an issue?
  • That's what I said before, but it kind of was the original purpose of the thread.
  • You can change. You can.
Well, it's unlikely, yes, but shouldn't we at least try?
