@Juan: We agree, then, that the way she was introduced could've been greatly improved. I'm just not quite so willing to let it slide.

@vandro: I'm not comparing it on the basis of how it handled the original canon, I'm comparing it on the basis of how each respective version handled the introduction of Asuka's character, and the ways the show did it better.

@Vorpy: The first movie is episodes 1-6. The second movie is a hodge-podge of various episodes between 8 and 18, out of sequence with large chucks of new material added it. For movies 3 and 4, only God knows what's gonna happen.

    CRIMINAL SCUM!
^^6 The first episode is. The second changes the ending. And who knows what the 3rd and 4th will be about.

I see what you get at, and I agree that yes, she got the short end of the stick in Rebuild, but asuka is still just one main character, not the cast. I would have expected you to be more pissed off on how the entirety of NERV have become just puppets moving according to the plot and not fleshed out characters.

I did say that the characters were dumbed down.

Then again, given the length and structure of the medium, I'm not sure they could've fit in the original show's psychological development in (that is, while still telling the three-act story and not going the EoE route) if they tried.

On the other hand, that's probably an attractive prospect for those people who hate the show or don't want to watch it because of the psychological tension. That Hideaki Anno is an evil genius.

But from a fan's perspective, it leaves me wondering whether they should've made Rebuild at all.

Remakes and follow ups of cashcows are inevitable. And I liked EoE.
  • You can change. You can.
Honestly, Rebuild 2.0 is pure setup, and I think that to judge it properly, you need to wait if the pay off is good.

So should I watch all of it? Or are some of the movies unimportant retellings of the same story?

@Juan: In that case, Rebuild 1 might as well not exist.

It's the setup of a set up.

    You can change. You can.
Zabu: Not really. Way I see it, Rebuild 1 is pretty self contained, while Rebuild 2 is all about setting up the possible Third Impact, Shinji and Rei possible relatioship, Mari's existence, Asuka's eyepatch etc etc.

So should I watch all of it? Or are some of the movies unimportant retellings of the same story?

I liked all of it, personally. If anything, watch the first for the awesome battle at the end. If you don't care for that kinda stuff, then go for two immediately.

  • So, can anyone tell me (I already know) the connection between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mario?
  • Did this thread always have a typo in the title?
  • You can change. You can.
    Dyre: Yup, yup.

    Conductor: Nup nup.
  • ^ I'll explain it then.

Robots from Evangelion appear in Super Robot Wars. Robots from SRW appear in Namco x Capcom. As do characters from Tekken, characters from Tekken appear in a Pac-Man game. And Pac-Man was in a Mario Kart Game.

    I'm such a nerd.
