You know, this OC hate still rather puzzles me for one simple reason - I was introduced to fanfic by the Warhammer 40K fandom. There, it's using canon characters that is stigmatised, mostly because it's felt to be stepping on the official fluff-writers' toes, and to be a demonstration of poor imagination when faced with the vast, diverse playground that is the setting. OC fics (well, the good ones anyway - this is fanfiction) tend to be more about exploring the fictional universe we've been given, allowing the writers to dig into places and concepts that are beyond the reach of the canon cast and storyline. Besides, if you want someone to approach things radically differently to how the canon characters did it, why not use an OC rather than some pale, horribly derailed shadow with a familiar-sounding name?

OC fics aren't inherently worse. They're just different. I mean, just look at the sort of fucked-up Suefics that involve canon characters. That's hardly a problem restricted to the originals.
