My school's filter system.

It doesn't exactly do anything. I have to wonder why it tells me that my session has been recorded and logged if I have never been reprimanded. I can try to enter like 50 porn links, get rejected every time and told that the administration knows about this.....and I'll never get in trouble. While looking up old threads of mine here, I ended up getting blocked from entering one that had "sex" in the title. At least, I assume that's why. The entire rest of the site is perfectly fine. And I'm also certain I've entered threads on forums before that had "sex" in the title, and I never was blocked. So it's also inefficient....

Now we know how to prevent Chagen from seeing a thread.  Put "sex" in the title.

In seriousness, though, your story follows one that I just heard from a meatspace friend, who has an assignment to research the Occupy and Tea Party movements, and she discovered that the Occupy Wall Street site is blocked.
  • Wow.

It's just wrong when a school blocks sites that are opposed to it politically. My own, thankfully, doesn't do that.
  • I forget where, but I remember hearing about a tinyurl getting blocked because the random alphanumeric ID string happened to have "sex" in it.
  • I stand on Grendel's shoulders
My old highschool's filtering system was really anal about games for some reason.

    Like, even MSPA was blocked.
  • My school only seems to filter popular sites.

Which is why I can go on here right. This place is ridiculously niche. Same way I can go on Aveneca, even though it's a forum--who the hell besides me in this school would know of an Swedish Conlanging forum that is conducted mainly in English?

  • But you never had any to begin with.
My college filtered gardening, for some reason I never understood. As in, that was actually a filter category of its own.
  • My college filters nothing. My high school, being small and private and funky and liberal, only filtered Facebook and maybe a handful of other things, but was otherwise quite unrestricted. And even then, people found ways around it just fine.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^^
Perhaps someone really really hated gardening?
  • My workplace filters social networking sites and forums generally. I assume they also filter porn, having never tried to access it from work (it's far, far too risky).
  • ...

WHY WOULD A COLLEGE EVER FILTER ANYTHING.

    WHY.
  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy
I haven't ever come across censorship on my uni network. Nearly everyone seems to go on facebook and shit.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
^^ English colleges don't have people living in them, so it's not so big a deal.
  • Oh. Ok. I know that Bob Jones place has internet censoring going on, but I thought they were unique, but if it's not a boarding, then it's a different kettle of fish.

So does Pensacola Christian College I think.

My college doesn't bother to filter anything.  Even if they wanted to, the computer science department usually sees at least 2-3 people a year make a proxy server as a project for some class or other, so it wouldn't matter :|

Closest they'll come is throttling a connection if people are streaming crap continually, but it's all bandwidth and blind to specific content.
  • probably human
My school blocks Wikipedia, apparently for being a blog forum thing.

Yet it doesn't block many actual forums, like the TV Tropes forum.

    ...WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
The only thing my college doesn't allow are torrents, and even then they won't block them so much as fine you if they catch you doing it.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    My college blocked porn.
Games were still allowed and the like.

My University had no block, they just provided on campus wireless, that was all.
