"All germans are nazis!"

So my German class is going to a festival called Wurstfest, organized by the large German population in the town it is in. My mom started to get all worried and flipped out. She is basically convinced that I am going to get hurt/kidnapped/whatever the fuck. When I told her that these are ordinary, civilized germans we're talking about, she retorted that the Nazis slaughtered tons of jews. This, in my mom's view, somehow makes modern-day Germans uncivilized barbarians. She it steadfastly convinced that half of Germany are Neo-Nazis. This is coming from a woman who lived in Germany herself as a child* Why do I have to put up with this shit *: Her dad is in the military and he was stationed in Germany during her childhood

That's, um... wow. My mother comes from Germany, and my grandfather was in Hitler Youth. That honestly offended me. That doesn't happen often.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Oi gevalt.
  • I wonder what your mother would say if she ever found out what Americans have done.
  • I have no idea.

I don't like to instigate things with my parents, though, so I probably won't ask.
  • No rainbow star
...I bet she would say that America did what it had to and all the actions had a good reason

    Just a hunch
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
For example, The Trail of Tears had the very good reason of 'They had stuff we wanted.'
  • So would your mother worry you would get kidnapped if you took a trip to Germany?
  • No.

She really meant "German hicks are uncivilized", because I cracked a joke--"mom, these are european hicks we're talking about. They're much more civilized."
  • And now I'm not surprised that your mother flipped out.
  • Why?

She was already flipping out and getting paranood, I just felt like cracking a joke to satirize the silliness of her reaction.
  • Silly mom, it's gypsies that steal children. Lern2stereotype.
  • Here I was, going to go chide op at the ridiculousness of said sentence, and how no one actually thinks that.

    ...

I'm just going to go sit in a corner.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Here I was, going to go chide op at the ridiculousness of said sentence, and how no one actually thinks that.

    ...

I'm just going to go sit in a corner.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Haven't we already established that Chagen's parents are essentially American conservative caricatures given flesh? Why is this surprising?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
You should never say 'No one actually thinks that'

because the world is full of crazies.
  • My mom is actually more moderate.

She is a....free thinker to say the least.

At the very least, she doesn't have a problem with my bisexualty.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Yeah, this isn't a commonly-held belief whatsoever, but there are undercurrents of it sometimes. Like Orcus up there, by grandfather was a Hitler Youth member and served in combat during WWII. My surname is German. So's the bulk of my martial arts, and much of my historical interest. It comes up, although more often in humour. The thing is that the humour is very context-sensitive and much of it wears thin. A Nazi joke here and there is fine, but doing the Nazi march in plain sight doesn't amuse me.

  • No rainbow star
^ Well there goes my surprise for you :<
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
(psst) Nobody mention the war around Alex!
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Vhat var!?

    Clean your room little Billy
Say what you will about the tenets of national socialism, at least it's an ethos. An ethos with at least a century's worth of comedy value to it.
  • I stand on Grendel's shoulders
Is it strange that when I think Germany, I don't think Nazis or WWII or anything like that?

Nah, I just think of the language(s) and the ancient history.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
Old news are old. You already made a thread about that.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^ I jump directly to the HRE, but that's me.
  • German stereotypes are digging holes on beach, still possessing grandpa's bike and telling people to keep walking straight onwards whenever someone asks directions to the train station.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Around here, Germans (and Austrians) are known to be excellent boozers, on par with ourselves and the Celts.
  • I stand on Grendel's shoulders
^^ I have never heard of any of these.

I just think of bearded people living on boats when I think of Germans.
  • Holland, so we had a German occupation. The first one refers to German troops digging themselves in on the beaches in case of a naval invasion, they confiscated bikes during said occupation(since it's a damn handy vehicle for getting around in a small country full of dyked marshes) and the last refers to a form of passive resistance by giving the wrong directions, made famous in a Kooten & De Bie sketch. Needless to say, this is constantly brought up around our eastern neighbours whenever it's football season again, along with inserting "wir haben es nicht gemussen" wherever we can. The Dutch are not known for a tasteful sense of humour.
  • You can change. You can.
doing the Nazi march in plain sight doesn't amuse me.

    Not even John Cleese's?
  • Is it strange that when I think Germany, I don't think Nazis or WWII or anything like that?

Nah, I just think of the language(s)
