  • "Heaven forbid I have an opinion.

Oh wait, I forgot. Having opinions is Wrong(TM)"

When the arguments backing up your opinion are full of [citation needed], yes, your opinion is wrong. Like this:

"Capitalism works because humans are greedy pieces of shit. We're the most horrible beings on Earth."

Do you even have any sociological or anthropological evidence to back that up? In fact, don't even bother. This premise is brimming with counterexamples if you're applying this to all humans.

  • Just what kind of counterexamples do you have in mind?
  • No rainbow star
Chagen, never say ALL. A definitive statement like that is bad *coughevenifImyselfbelieveallactionsaremotivatedbygreedatsomelevelcough*
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I like where this thread is going.

Um...anyone that stands up for social justice? Anyone that acts in concern for the well-being of other beings? Anyone who seeks to further knowledge for the sake of knowledge? Anyone who aims to build a better world for everyone? I could go on, but hopefully you get the point.

And before you bring up selfishness still being a motive, selfishness and altruism are not incompatible. Also, while some of these people are hypocritical, not all of them are.

^I anticipated the thread would go this way from the start.

  • They're somethin' else.
thank you very much for answering my question, guys.
  • It's your opinion. You're supposed to decide based on your interpretation of the facts.
  • edited 2011-10-15 17:45:13
^^ I'm guessing neither side, then?
  • I figure you should do your own research. There's a huge amount of material in regards to the abuses of socialism, but there is just as much for capitalism. See which side's benefits outweigh the flaws better. But keep in mind that in practice, economies are a mixture of both anyway.
  • Actually guys, I only call myself a socialist to curry favor with people on the internet, as calling yourself even a mild capitalist apparently means that you're a horrible person who bathes in the blood of Chinese child sweatshop workers and literally exist only to cause suffering to others.

  • ...Stop doing that.

Juan has stated that he favours capitalism several times, and I don't think he does all that. Er, does he?
  • That makes no sense at all.
  • I prefer capitalism actually for irrational, philosophical, and idealistic reasons. Which is why I'm starting to slowly lean towards Socialism at this point.
  • ...Every single time you post it goes exactly like this.

    Chagen: Opinion.
    Someone Else: I disagree.
Chagen: AH MA GAD HAVING AN OPINION IS BAD NOW IS IT? WOE IS ME
Someone Else: Actually, no one is saying that
Chagen: Well actually, Opinion isn't really my opinion, my opinion is actually the opposite of Opinion.

    Every. Freaking. Time. Dude. WHY?!
  • Because he's a teenager.
  • Pfft when I was a teenager I said what was on my mind regardless of how appropriate it was and stuck to it, tooth and nail.

    @Chagen

    It goes:

    Think --> Post

    not

Post --> Overreact --> Change sides repeatedly --> End up a hypocrite

^^ I'm a teenager and I realize not to do what Chagen does. Hell, I knew not to do that by the time I was 8.
  • I always figured most Westerners prefer capitalism, but very few people prefer total laissez-faire capitalism.

I think the U.S. needs more effort placed into social programs and market regulation, but I'm sure there are some places who could do with less. Italy and Greece haven't handled things so well, for instance.

Depends on what you mean by capitalism. Few people outside the US would advocate capitalism to the level the US has. In fact, this is one of the biggest cause of values dissonance between the US and most of the industrialised world.
  • There's nothing wrong with having capitalism as your economic system. What is wrong is when you deny there is nothing wrong with it, because when you do that you aren't allowing yourself or anyone else to fix the problems that it has. All economic systems have flaws, it's just this one has ones we can deal with.

In my opinion, most countries that fail with social policies (At least, well implemented ones) would fail without the social policies anyway.
  • No system is perfect. But I damn well prefer the shortfalls of communism than the shortfalls of capitalism.
  • I prefer the shortfalls of Socialism, but the shortfalls of Communism include the possibility of going back to Capitalism, but worse (See: China and North Korea) so I'd have to say no to Communism.
  • You can change. You can.

  • Say, is their healthcare as good as advertised?
  • You can change. You can.
It's free and the doctors are well trained, yeah. Although you'll be visiting them a lot due to malnutrition, so make of that what you will

If you're a Cuban resident, of course.

^x3 I have no idea, but I have noticed that:

    * Powerful people in Venezuala go to Cuba for health care.

    * Arab oil sheiks and illegal immigrants go to the U.S. for healthcare

  • You can change. You can.
[Insert long rant on the US's economic blockade of Cuba]

Yeah, admittedly, Cuba wouldn't be socialist/communist were it not for the fact that the US decided to not negotiate with them anymore because of the lost priviliges that Batista administration brought with him and were it not for russia's help.

the thing is, I don't think that communism is inherently bad, but I don't ascribe to the idea that it's inherently better than capitalism. I'd prefer either an hybrid system or an entirely new one. But if the choice comes to the both of them, then call me an economical apathetic.
