Why is this such a common belief? It's not how novel/new your stick is, it's how you use said stick. Trying too hard to be new usually fails horribly. That, and as Tropes themselves show, it's basically impossible to come up with something utterly original.

    It is true that you can make something cliche or unoriginal good by the way you present it. But like I said, I don't think YOU have the writing to pull that off.

    How about instead of making a new, pointless thread about something that is obviously in response to something I said, you bring it up with me, instead of being so passive aggressive about it?

    There's merit in producing a stick that is unlike any other stick, since that usually means there's some possibility that the new stick will have unforeseen qualities and will add to our knowledge of stick-making. Even if it's a failure, that's useful information.

    .... Tropes only proves that if you generalize enough, you can make completely different things sound similar.

    As for why "original = good" let's be honest: no matter how well done something is, it gets boring, and the mind craves a new experience. I mean, I love Doom. To this day its still one of my favorite first-person shooters. But I don't play it every freaking day--sometimes I'm just sick of it. And if you were to make a new game that was basically Doom with different graphics (lets call it "Heretic") I would probably wait until it goes on sale before buying it, because yes, its more of something I love... but its not different enough to justify paying more than I would for an expansion pack.
